be re-built annually, and taking the average excess at 150
Square feet, and the average value of land throughout the
City at 16 per Square foot, the cost of the resumption of
such portions of land should not exceed $5,000 yearly.
Section 180. In future when a dwelling is
re-built there must be set apart an open space in the rear of
a width of not less than 6 feet to form a scavenging lane (un-
less half the width of this lane is left to be provided by
the adjoining owner at some future time) and this area of
open space, which may be roughly calculated at 90 Square feet
per house if the full width of 6 feet is provided,will be
purchased by the Crown at its current market value.
Last year 898 new buildings were completed and
accepted as being in accordance with the Public Health Ordi-
nance. Of these 161 were houses re-built on sites previously
occupied. Disregarding Kowloon where scavenging lanes already
exist,it
it is found that 140 of these re-built houses were in
the City of Victoria. It may be assumed therefore that at
least 140 houses yearly will be re-built in Victoria. The
number of scavenging lanes in the City already belonging to
the Crown is so small that it may practically be disregarded,
and on the assumption that a space for a lane will be required
for each of the 140 houses and will be made 6 feet wide at
once (as will no doubt be generally the case where a space
for a lane is left), the amount required annually for resumption
under this head would be 140 by 15 by 6 by 16 or more than
$200,000.
